So it’s one day to the end of the year and I feel a huge speech should be in order.

2016 has been… wow. God has been wonderful and gracious throughout the year, in spite of the economic recession, insurgency and all that and that that happened in Nigeria.

In 2016 I learnt a whole lot about life, about myself and even about people around me. I lost some friends, I made new ones. I learnt and I grew.

Fast forward to the beginning of the year I was a fresher in undergrad school, writing my stories and articles in a private book, now I have a blog where I can share my art for the world to see.

There are so many things on my mind, yet it’s as though there’s nothing on my mind. No matter how 2016 may have been for you, still thank God, you’re here today, you’re here right now. Make the best of it.

Wishing you all a happy New Year in advance

EXP #1.5

My heart rate lurched forward as I felt those strong hands grip my arms. How on earth did Henshaw find me?

I turned around in resignation, no point fighting anymore at this point.

“Boo” he said as I laid eyes on him, it was Bruno!

I put my hand over my mouth as gasped, then threw my arms around him as he pulled me into a fierce hug.

“I’ve missed you” he whispered into my ear

“Are you mad ni? How do you go off and live with a man you don’t even know? He could be a ritualist, or a human trafficker or… one of all these bad people that plague Nigeria today sha!” Bruno all but screamed at me, we were sitted at the back of an eatery, he’d bought me ice-cream which I contentedly licked off my spoon as he nagged like a Nigerian woman.

“Bruno, calm down I had no choice–” I began, before he cut me off saying

“What do you mean you had no choice? Why will you go off and live in the same house with an unknown man, I hope he hasn’t” Bruno consciously looked me the eye and reduced the volume at which he was speaking “I hope he didn’t try anything with you o?”

I shook my head no “I have my own room and he never let’s me into his”

Bruno nodded “Good, but I don’t like this one bit, at all, at all I don’t like it” he emphasised “Wait… I don’t understand”

“How will you understand when you won’t even let me explain?” I asked sarcastically.

Oya, explain o”

“Two weeks ago, I was at a party and I bumped into one of my old friends”

Bruno audibly groaned. I used to move with a bunch of street rascals: thugs, thieves and what-not. Whenever or wherever my old friends were mentioned or involved nothing good ever came from it.

“One thing led to another and I was dared to steal a car. Don’t interrupt, just listen” I warned as Bruno opened his mouth to speak “stupid I know, but you know me, I never back out of a dare. We went to the car park and they told me to choose whichever car I wanted, unfortunately for me, there was a Honda Pilot in the lot, and you know that’s my dream car. There was no one in sight and I successfully broke into it and we decided to go on a joyride.

“I planned to return it back the next day, I swear, I took the car home with me and slept very late, I woke up late in the afternoon and once I remembered the car I rushed out and drove off, as I was driving, I swear it’s like the witches from my mother’s house were following me that day o, that’s how one trailer at my side started driving nonsense next to me, at some point, it remained small ehn, it would have hit me, in a bid to get away from it, I swerved to the next lane without thinking, I don’t even understand where that boy came from sef, there was a boy crossing the road on the lane I just swerved to, I was about to hit him, I swear, it was God that just saved me, I swerved violently to what I thought was the next lane, but there was no lane there, I hit the road block and before I knew anything the car was out of my control, until I crashed into a nearby tree, that was when the car stopped.

“Unfortunately for me again, FRSC people were stationed very close to where I crashed the car, when they got there they saw that I wasn’t harmed or anything, it was the other side of the car that was mostly affected, then they started asking questions I couldn’t answer about the car, they asked for the vehicle’s documents, but I didnt have anything on me, not even my licence.

“One of the officers now scanned the plate number on their database and said that the vehicle had been reported missing that very morning, they took me into custody and from what I was hearing up and down, the car belonged to a very influential man and I was going to rot in prison for a substantial amount of time. So I was shocked when they let me out of my cell and let me go, they said that the owner of the car had asked that they release me, as I stepped out, some guys in suits and shades had me follow them into their car, we drove to one mansion like that where they bundled me inside this small boy’s quarters part of the building, I was so scared and nervous at the same time, I had an asthma attack, something that I thought I’d already outgrown o! As the attack started that was when the guy came in, he now told them to bundle me to the hospital, where I was later stabilised.

“When he told me, the amount of money that he’d paid for my hospital bill alone, I knew I couldn’t pay, he knew that too, he then told me the amount that was needed to get the car fixed and knew I couldn’t afford to pay so he told me I was going to be like his personal property and I was going to work for him till he got back his last kobo”

“Wow” Bruno exhaled when I was done with my tale “you are so stupid” he finally said after a long period of silence “very, very stupid”

“No need to tell me”

“C’mon, let’s get going, maybe your bodyguard got tired of looking for you and went home” Bruno said, I shook my head in doubt and looked at my watch, we’d been here for about 35 minutes.

We left the eatery, with our arms linked together and began strolling around the mall, window shopping as we looked into the glass walls. Bruno’s phone beeped causing us to pause as he brought it out of his pocket to check whatever out.

“Ahem” someone coughed in front of us, I looked up and my heart lurched forward as I beheld the Slave Master himself, I gasped as my eyes widened considerably in shock and I became dizzy.

“What’s going on?” Bruno asked looking back and forth between us.

“Let’s get going” the Slave Master said to me breaking the silence moments later, as I failed to speak.

“Going to where? Who are you? She’s not going anywhere with you!” Bruno all but yelled, stepping in front of me, as he put his hand in mine and tried to use his body as a human shield, blocking my view of the Slave Master.

“Who is he?” Bruno turned his neck to look at me as he asked. “Is this the bodyguard?” he tried again.

I shook my head no, in that moment the Slave Master sidestepped so I could see his face again, I looked up at him as soon as he was in my line of vision.

“Is this… ” Bruno almost seemed scared to say it. Almost. “Is this him?”

I gave a faint nod, Bruno then turned to look at him, as in look at him, and I did same also.

The Slave Master was dressed in a grey suit, red and blue striped tie, blue shirt and black leather shoes, I looked at his face, he didn’t look any older than 25, his jaw stood out tense, his lips pressed together, and his eyes were currently on me, I immediately regretted looking at him and averted my gaze.

“Let’s go” he said again with his usual air of authority.

I let go of Bruno’s hand and started off to meet him, Bruno clenched his teeth, the way he usually did when provoked and stepped up to the Slave Master till they were toe-to-toe.

“And who the hell do you think you are?!” Bruno spat, he stood half a head shorter as the Slave Master looked down at him, said man then shifted his gaze to meet mine, he jerked his head to the side before saying “Henshaw is waiting for you”

I looked in the direction he’d indicated, and true to his word Henshaw stood there beholding us from afar, I looked back at the Slave Master who was currently having a heated staring contest with Bruno “Bruno, let it go” I said to him, then quickly planted a peck on his cheek before running off to meet Henshaw.

Seasons Greetings 🎄

🍔 Cheeseburger.

So let’s press pause on the holidays, and the festivities, and the presents, and the food and drinks and parties, let’s pause everything. And let’s think hard and think deep.

Let us think:

  • What is the point?
  • What is the point of all this celebration?
  • What is the point of the festivities?
  • What is the point of presents?
  • What is the point of Christmas?

Have you thought about that? If not give yourself a moment to do so.

So the whole story boils down to a father, I mean, The Father, who looked down on us pitiful humans wallowing in our sins without any means of redemption or reconciliation and decided to send his only son, as in, his one and only son, the only heir to his kingdom, his only begotten son. And what was the son sent to do?
The son came down to earth and the whole point of his staying on earth was to be crucified on the cross bearing the sins of the whole world, so that we would be redeemed and reconciled with the father. He came to live so that he could die, so as to give us life.

And didn’t stop at giving us life. No. He reconciled us with his father, thereby allowing us to also become sons- children of the father; and the best part for me, remember how I said that the son being his father’s only child was the only heir? Well, since his death made us children of God, that by extension made us joint heirs with the son, meaning we now had a right to and an inheritance in his father’s Kingdom.

Why will anyone go through all these, exactly?

  • Why would a father care for humans who kept on offending him, to the point that he’d send down his son to die, so that they may be reconciled?
  • Why would the son willingly come down and die for people, who kept on offending his father?
  • Why would the son come and die for an offence he didn’t even partake in?

It all boils down to one four letter word.

Because of the love the father- God, has for mankind, he sent his son- Jesus to die for us, so that we may be redeemed unto him. And that was the greatest display of love. Ever! So the whole point of the story I just told was love. God loves us.

God loves you. If you doubt that look around you, he has given you yet another Christmas to celebrate here on earth.

So what is the point of Christmas?

Christmas is the celebration of the birth of the Saviour of the world, the Saviour that loved us so much he came to die for us. So the point of Christmas is basically love.

So let’s not forget: he is the reason for the season and let’s take time out to show love today like never before. Show love to a stranger, your neighbour, your sister, whoever! Just don’t let the point of Christmas be wasted on you.

So let me tell you about my latest obsession.

My latest obsession is a person, the craziest person I’ve met in awhile, probably the craziest person I know.

Roncio or Corn. I prefer Corn.

We connect on this whole other level. Ed Sheeran lovers who have about the same philosophy on the issue of company. We believe that there is nothing better than your own company; people are a welcome distraction, a side-attraction he said, but they’re still a distraction nonetheless. In the end it’s just you and yourself and your thoughts left.

He also has a poetic soul, he sent me this piece of poetry and… sigh. He’s also as punny as a blue film. You see what I did there? If you think that was bad he’s way worse.

Me: Good night

Him: Bad pawn

Me: Goan sleep

Him: Get me a banana 🍌

He photo-bombed me one time and I asked if he did it on purpose, and he said “Yes, but it was a poor pose”

All these always lead me to ask the same question over and again “Where did I find you???”

So to the best friend who didn’t bother to let me know before we became best friends, I look forward to more witty banter, more sarcasm, more smart-ass remarks and more years of friendship.

>I could have saved this for your birthday, but I ain’t gat no chill, besides your birthday doesn’t fall on one of my blogging days. So consider this an early birthday present<

That aside, I posted earlier today because Makybelle commented on my last post that I should, but I accidentally deleted the post, so I had to start all over again.

Anyways… Who smells Christmas around the corner??? Seasons Greetings everyone.

Next post on Christmas day.

Ikosi-Isheri Local Government Area.

The bold sign called out to me from where it sat boldly next to an overhead bridge, I initially had my doubts, but it was all clear as we made our way back to the house from Mile 12, I also took time to notice some landmarks as we moved along.

“Bruno” I said into the phone, as soon as Henshaw left house after we’d brought in all the foodstuff we’d bought “I’m in Magodo”

“How did you find out, are you sure?”

“Yes, I had to go to the market today, so he let me out”

“So when can we meet up?” he asked eagerly

“Umm, there’s a mall nearby, if we meet there, I could easily get myself lost in the throng of people and leave the driver”

“I will find it, how will you leave that house again and when?”

“Tomorrow? You’re sure?”

“Yes, tomorrow, see you soon”

“You didn’t give me enough money for the market yesterday” I said to the Slave Master as he ate breakfast the next morning.

“As long as you were able to get the necessary things” he said with a shrug, then continued with his meal.

“I have to buy some stuff”

“You already bought stuff”

“Umm, I forgot to get some… erm… feminine stuff”

He promptly choked on his food, and gulped down his glass of water as his eyes watered, I rolled my eyes as he looked up me when he was done, which in turn earned me a frown.

“I’ll send Henshaw to you later this afternoon”

Breaking free of Henshaw was a whole lot harder than I’d expected. I’d always had doubts, but I was finally convinced that professional bodyguards exist in Nigeria.

When I’d told him we were going to the mall, he seemed sceptical but drove me over anyways, upon arrival, it had been next to impossible to shake him off. He gave me a considerable amount of space, but not enough to allow me escape easily, I constantly increased my walking speed and delved into crowds and rounded corners spontaneously, but when I stylishly found a way to look behind me, he was still there.

It was only by a stroke of luck I managed to successfully escape from him, when I saw he was distracted with his phone on a call, I ran as fast as I could into the nearest corner and ducked into the second store I saw. Fortunately for me it was a clothing store with changing rooms available, I immediately ran to the first changing room I found and spent exactly 5 minutes before leaving. Once outside, Henshaw was nowhere to be seen, I immediately took my phone out of my pocket “Bruno, I’ve lost him” I said as soon as he picked “where are you?”

“No, stay right where you are, I don’t want you running into whoever again, tell me where you are” he said.

I disclosed my location to him and went back and into the store. So as not to attract the attention of the salespersons, I began to look around, making a mental note to come back when I got some good cash, I paused as I saw a rack of skirts and took time to admire them. I felt a pair of hands take hold of my arm from behind.

I’d hate myself if I were you also. First, she posts late, as in very late. Then, she goes on to end the piece like this.

I’m so sorry guys, my apologies, next post tomorrow, I’ll also probably post late.

She walked into the kitchen and the first thing she saw was the glass cup.

The glass cup sitting in the sink.

The glass cup that was half-filled with leftover juice, her favourite juice.

She felt the urge to snatch it up from the sink and pour it’s content down her throat. Her mouth watered as her tongue anticipated the lemony taste.

She walked closer to the sink, the sink was clean. The sink was nearly empty, 2 ceramic plates sat within it, both holding grains of leftover jollof rice, the plate nearest to her had a half-eaten drumstick.

There was no one else around, she could quickly do justice to the drumstick and down the content of the glass before anyone came in. Sighing, she shook her head. He’d told her not to eat things like that again, he’d told her that he’d changed her status, no respectable person ate leftovers from the sink, and she was now a respectable person.

Upon realisation of her new status, she poured away the content of the glass upon the ceramic plates and in turn poured their content into the nearby bin.

“You were going to eat it abi?” Lucy said, startling her, as she came in through the backdoor.

“No” she gulped “I was sent to wash the plates”

“And you were about to eat the visitors leftovers- ajeku that is meant for the dustbin.”

“No” she protested weakly “I wasn’t”

“Yes, you were. And you know why?  Because you’re a street rat, and once a street rat always a street rat. You are a filthy low-life, disgusting. Nothing good can ever come out of you. You may be here living in this nice mansion, but you don’t belong here. This isn’t your life, you belong on the streets”

“Stop! Stop it!” she screamed “I belong here, I deserve this. He set me free, he paid my debts, he brought me out of prison, he changed my name and gave me a new one, he changed my life because he knows I’m worth it. I know I am worth it. Gone are the days when I used to scrounge around dumpsters and dustbins. That’s not me, not anymore”

Lucy shook her head “You don’t deserve it. You’re not meant to be here”

“I know I don’t deserve it, but he has pardoned me and saved me from judgement and condemnation. I’ve been given a second chance, I wont waste it”

“That’s what you think, wait till you mess up. He will be so disap–”

“Enough Lucy” his booming voice echoed through the kitchen, he stood in the doorway, apparently, he’d been listening to their little conversation all along.

“Erm… I… You see… I… ” Lucy began to stammer.

“I said enough, leave her be. I had mercy on her and decided to save her, it’s not your duty to condemn her”

“Yes sir” Lucy said, with her eyes to the ground as she made her way out of the kitchen

2 Corinthians 5:17 KJV
Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

John 8:36 KJV

If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.

Who else noticed I changed my narration style from 1st person to 3rd person POV?

The central theme of Sunday school today was compassion, Christ was compassionate towards us and died for us, and I decided to put something similar up.

That aside, who else smells Christmas??? Seasons Greetings to everyone, may the essence of Christ’s birth never cease to make meaning in our lives. Amen

Atoke Oni,

Kutu mi owon,

The most beautiful thing in my universe -after myself of course.

You really did suffer for me, the sickly Caesar.

I can’t begin to imagine your pains when you brought me forth,

Or your fear, all those times you thought I would possibly die.

A woman of God, a woman of faith, a woman of virtue.

You have taught me so many things directly and indirectly,

At the time, I didn’t value your wisdom,

But today, I reflect and I say ‘thank God for my mother’

Mother really does know best.

One thing I’m always grateful for is the fact that you introduced me to my first love, who has captured and consumed my heart with his love.

You taught me that with Jesus in my life I’m good to go because he is more than enough.

Of course you have taught me a whole lot of other things, I only cited the most important to me.

Ye mi, ese o
