Lost? Click here to start over and catch up with the story

Its Tuesday evening.

I cringed as another crashing sound came from upstairs.

The Slave Master has been at it for close to 20 minutes now.

He stormed into the house and went upstairs without so much of a glance in my direction—not that it bothered me or anything—his personal aides had followed him in, dropped his stuff off in his study and made their exit immediately. Then it started, different crashing and breaking sounds came from his room intermittently, each one causing me to jump in fear.

What could be wrong with the Slave Master?

The sound of household furniture that had just met its demise met my ears once again.

I sighed as I stood up from where I was perched on the couch.

Shaking my head as I thought to myself ‘I can’t take this anymore’ I marched up the stairs.

I paused at the landing that led to his room and I remembered how the Slave Master had categorically warned me not to set foot into his room. I hesitated as I realised just how foolish a step I was about to take. The Slave Master was usually very ill-tempered on his good days, and today was apparently a bad day for him. Was it really in my place to get him to stop this temper tantrum of his?

The sound of something breaking not too far away from me pulled me out of my reverie and made up my mind for me. I marched forward to the Slave Master’s room.

The door was open and right in front of it lay the carcass of a dead Samsung phone.

I took a deep breath before pushing the door open, the sound of my entry made the Slave Master pause from where he stood and he turned to look at me, lowering his arm which held a bedside lamp that he was probably about to fling out of the window.

“What are you doing here?” he asked in his dead and emotionless voice.

I blinked.

I had not been expecting that question.

What exactly was I doing here?

I thought I already decided that it wasn’t in my place to get him to stop his temper tantrum?

How had my brain forgotten to process this information to the rest of my body?

Oh crap!

“Are you deaf?” he bellowed, causing me to shrink back from where I stood in terror.

I cleared my throat “Um…”

I cleared my throat again, it seemed as though all my words were stuck there and my brain wasn’t even making an effort to want to function at all.

I don’t know for how long I stood there, standing like a fool, probably with my mouth hanging open because the Slave Master suddenly burst out laughing.

I just kept staring, and he kept laughing. As in, actual laughter and not the usual humourless and dead laughter I was used to from him. He doubled over and wiped his eye and looked up at me and burst into another fit of hysteria.

That was when I shut my mouth.
He was probably laughing at me and how foolish I looked. Scratch the probably part. He was laughing at me and how foolish I looked.

“What’s so funny?” I finally found my voice when he was done.

“Oh God! You should have seen the look on your face”

I sighed and looked around the room. Everything was a mess. The beside table lay in a broken heap, clothes were strewn all over the place, the full length dressing mirror lay in broken shards on the floor, and that was just the little I could see from where I stood at the door.

“Why don’t we go outside for a bit” I said looking up at the Slave Master who had been staring at me as I carried out my inspection on his room.

He obliged and followed me downstairs.

“I take it you’re in a bad mood” said I.

“How did you manage to figure that out?” he asked sarcastically.

“You know what you need?” I asked, ignoring his stupid comment.

“What?” he asked.

“Puff puff, puff puff always makes everything better. Where are your car keys? I know a place nearby that has the best puff puff” I replied.

“Are you kidding me?” he asked with his most serious straight face.

“Nope, I’m dead serious”

The Slave Master sighed then shrugged and ushered me outside.

Yay! We’re going to get puff puff!!!

Brino” Bruno said to me through the phone later that night.

“Stop disturbing me I want to sleep” I told him, hoping my tone was nasty enough to put him off. He’d been calling me non-stop since I hung up on him earlier today when he told me that he’d not been able to get anything tangible off the Slave Master’s computer, causing me to have an asthma attack in vain.

“Brino I’m sorry” he said.

“Is that all? Can I go to bed now?” I snapped.

“No” he said.

“What else?” I asked impatiently.

“Did you see Walter today?”

“What do you mean ‘Did I see Walter?’ How would I be able to see Walter, I’m locked up in this place all day” I was already annoyed.

“I saw him at the Slave Master’s house” Bruno said.

“What?” all my previous emotions were replaced by curiosity.

“Yeah, he came in as I was leaving, at first I wasn’t sure it was him, but one of the men greeted him and called his name, confirming my suspicion”

“What was Walter doing here?” I asked nonplussed.

“I don’t know. That’s why I called to ask if you saw him”

“No, I didn’t” I said to him as my head started spinning in different directions.

Walter was part of the den of thieves I used to move with before I met Bruno. He was Idris’ right-hand man; just like he’d found me and took me in, Idris had done same for Walter years before he met me and they were totally inseparable. You know how people say no smoke without fire? Well, Walter was the smoke to Idris’ fire.

I sat on my bed and sighed into the phone.

What business did Walter have with the Slave Master?

Did Idris know of Walter’s business with the Slave Master?

My head was a tangle of jumbled thoughts as I thought back to the last time I’d seen Walter, it was at a party nearly 2 months ago, a party Bruno had advised me not to go to. When I first saw him, I turned in the other direction hoping he hadn’t seen me, later events of the night had proven otherwise as Walter and a bunch of my other old friends had come up to me, we started talking and one thing led to another, he eventually dared me to steal a car; the car that landed me in my current situation if I might add.

“Brino, Brino, are you still there?” Bruno asked.

“Yeah” I replied slowly as I surfaced from the sea of my thoughts “Yeah, I’m here. I was just thinking of the last time I saw Walter”

“What happened?”

“He dared me to steal a car” I replied simply.

“Oh” Bruno said “… wait… you don’t mean…”

I could practically see the wheels spinning in his head so I kept quiet.

“You don’t mean that car. The Slave Master’s car? Right?”

I sighed into the phone giving him his answer.

“Coincidence much?” I finally said with a humourless laugh.

“Could it be a coincidence? Really?” Bruno voiced out my very thoughts.

The person who had dared me to a steal car, ended up in the house of the very person who owned the car I stole, while I was on house arrest there. What were the odds of that?

“It has to be a co-incidence” I said into the phone with doubt injected heavy into my words “it just has to be. Walter dared me to break into any car I wanted, it was a full parking lot and he wouldn’t have known the car I’d pick.”

My head was spinning wildly; I could feel my brain overheating already. I analysed everything from that night up to the present moment. Nothing was making sense.
I heard Bruno sigh into the phone moments later, as I recalled events that had taken place today and I was tempted to tell Bruno of the deal I made with the Slave Master just this evening, the only thing that stopped me was the statement the Slave Master made after I shook his hand.

“One more thing” he’d said through his devilish smile.

I blinked ‘what?’

“No one, no one at all must find out about this. Understood?”

I nodded yes.

“Alright, good night” at that he shifted his chair and left me alone in the dinning room.

“Bruno I’m tired” I said into the phone at last.

“Yeah, me too” he sighed “good night”

“Hey” I said to the Slave Master as he stepped into the house in the evening.

He appraised me with a raised eyebrow as I lay sprawled on a single seat couch, remote in hand, channel surfing.

“Hey yourself” he answered much to my surprise “Are you alright?”

“I should be asking you same. Are you alright? Did you hit your head or something?” I replied amidst my shock.

He gave a low huff, which was probably meant to be a laugh “I’m asking about your health” he deadpanned “I was informed of your asthma attack earlier today”

“What don’t you know?” I wondered aloud.

“What triggered it?” he asked ignoring my question.

I shrugged and changed the station.

“Should I bring your dinner?” I asked changing the topic.

The Slave Master looked at me funny for a little bit before nodding his head and going on inside.

“Why don’t you eat with me?” the Slave Master suggested as I served him dinner.

“I already ate” I replied, not bothering to look up as I kept on with pouring water into his cup.

“Sit by me then” he insisted.
I looked up at him now, he stared back with an unwavering gaze, then with a sigh I propped myself on the dinning chair next to his.

“Wow” he said “I was kind of looking forward to you putting up a fight”

“I know” I muttered staring at my hands as I placed them before me on the table “I try not to be too predictable every time”

“Hmmn, thank God you’re always predictable every time I need you to be”

“What?” I asked out of sheer confusion and received no reply. Typical.

I drummed my fingers along the table out of boredom “Just how lonely are you?”

“Very” he replied with a sincere burst of emotion which caused me to look up at him.

His face was a million emotions in one, I had not expected that.

“Are you alright?” I asked softly, this wasn’t the Slave Master I was used to.
No reply, as usual.

“Well, if you’re lonely, I suggest that you surround yourself with people and make new friends”

The Slave Master gave a dead laugh “I don’t like being around too many people and making new friends is not exactly my thing”

“Well, that’s the only cure to your loneliness” I stated matter-of-factly.

“I’m fine like this, besides I’m not lonely, I have you to keep me company” he looked up at me with that said.

“Yeah” I admitted “But what happens when I pay up and clock out?”

He shrugged “I have a suggestion”

I looked at him eagerly urging him to go on.

“Instead of paying me up, why don’t you… you know… do me a favour?”

My eyebrows shot up thinking of only one kind of favour that a man could ask of a woman, the Slave Master reading my thoughts gave a nervous laugh and said incredulously “I’m not talking of that kind of favour” causing my heart rate to go back to its normal pace.

“I’m not really popular with your aunt, so you probably know that I’m not welcome at Judisque-Allan, I’ll need you to help me deliver something to Nosa Osaretin’s secretary on Thursday”

“And once I deliver this thing, I’m a free being?” I asked, it all seemed too good to be true.

“Of course not” said the Slave Master as he burst my bubble “we’ll have to wait for maybe a week and if everything goes according to plan, you can walk”

“If not?” I asked.

The Slave Master shrugged like that was enough of an answer.

If not, I’d still have to pay up.

But what could he have me deliver that would clear a debt that ran into millions?

It didn’t make sense.

Barely anything did with the Slave Master though.

I looked up at him, to find his gaze fixed on me.

“Are you gonna do it?” he asked.
I closed my eyes and wondered some more what I could possibly be delivering that would clear my debt in a week.

I sighed, as I weighed my options before looking up at him.

“Fine” I said.

The Slave Master stretched out his hand to me for a handshake saying “Do I have your word?”

“Sure, whatever” I said as I shook his hand.

He then gave a smile, a full-blown smile that had me feeling like I’d just sold my soul to the devil.

Oh God, what have I just agreed to?

“Your mother was always in love with him, we all went to the same secondary school and started university in Nigeria before she got a scholarship to study abroad, I joined her a year later. She always kept in touch with him though, we came back to Nigeria 6 years later and he was already married.

“She was crazy in love and went on to have an affair with him thinking he’d leave his wife for her, she soon got pregnant, his wife didn’t have any children and he was excited, that was until the wife found out. They planned on escaping together, at that point my sister was very close to her delivery date, 2 days after they escaped Juliet fell into labour, it went on for 2 days and there were several complications. By the time she called me and I got to the hospital Nero, her lover was no where to be seen, she’d just delivered Vwaire, she died a few minutes later, they let me in to see her a few minutes before she passed on, she couldn’t say anything she just kept crying and calling for Nero, he’d apparently long since gone before I was alerted. Juliet was meant to have twins, but I was there right as she gave birth to Vwaire, I didn’t question anything, I went to Nero’s home to look for him afterwards and there was no one there, he’d changed his location of residence and I had no way to find him. Apparently my sister gave birth to you first, Brino and Nero made off with you, I don’t know what he expected to happen to my sister, but it’s just been just me and Vwaire ever since then” Vwaire’s aunt, my aunt- Aunty Juliana coughed and held her probably now lukewarm cup of coffee. She was a very strong woman and that was obvious, although a couple of tears escaped as she narrated her story, she kept her voice even and held her composure till the very end of it.

It was the next morning and the four of us were seated around the dinning table, we were allegedly having breakfast but no one had been able to actually eat anything.

“I still think we should get a DNA test done”  I said aloud.

I stared at everyone of them evenly, Aunty Juliana was about to say something but I beat her to it “All this is very new and also strange to me and I can’t help but feel like an outsider, I just want to be 100% sure that all of this is actually really true. Please”

Aunty Juliana nodded with understanding “when you are ready we can all go to the hospital”

“Thank you” I said then proceeded to stir my cup of tea with the teaspoon before downing it, Vwaire and Tinuade were seated next to one another on the dinning table and had been quiet through it all. I excused myself and went up to the room allocated to me. We left for the hospital a few hours later to get the DNA test done “Your results will be sent to you by tomorrow” the lab technician said although I had a feeling nothing was going to change, I just wanted to be 100% sure.

The ride back to the house was basically uneventful until I saw a very familiar Honda Pilot parked right across the street from the house. As soon as the car was parked within the compound, I quickly jumped out of it and left the building, I took a few moments to admire my dream car as I walked towards it, the windows were tinted at the side and every other thing had been restored to it, it looked so brand new no one would ever have guessed that I crashed it about 3 weeks ago.
“How did you find me?” I asked as soon as the door was opened even before I saw his face.

He alighted from the car and looked at me with a raised eyebrow as if that was answer enough to my question “I thought I warned you never to run away from me again?”

“I didn’t run away, there was a mix-up at the party, someone mistook me for someone else”

“How does that even make any–

The Slave Master was cut off with the sound of the pedestrian gate being opened behind us.

“Brino who is this?” Aunty Juliana asked as she stepped onto the road walking to where we stood.

“Damiloju Rotimi-Savage ma, I’m Brino’s boyfriend” the Slave Master said turning on his charming airs as he walked up to Aunty Juliana with his hand outstretched for a shake.

Aunty Juliana regarded his hand “Rotimi-Savage” she tasted the name “don’t tell me you are related to the business magnate, Demola Rotimi-Savage”

“I am actually, he’s my dad” the Slave Master said with a smile at being recognised.

Aunty Juliana’s face instantly morphed into one of contempt and probable disgust “You are related to that awful man? I never want to see you anywhere near my house again” the Slave Master was visibly taken aback by Aunty Juliana’s words, but she didn’t care, turning to me she said “How can this even be your boyfriend? I know his father, that man is bad news and you know what they say, like father like son be very careful with this one”

“Actually, he’s not my boyfreind”

Damiloju had to excuse himself at that point, Brino was close to asking a question on a subject he was not ready to touch, a subject he had not been able to touch for the past 6 years.

“It’s like you don’t go out much, at least not as much as you used to when these people were close to you” she asked as Femi left after greeting them. He and Femi had known each other since secondary school, they’d been in the same class for 2 consecutive years and were pretty close, of course Damiloju had gradually cut off every one from his life after the unfortunate incident, but that didn’t stop Femi and the others from coming over to greet him. Some people were excited as they approached him, some approached him warily, but they were all mostly shocked to see him at a social gathering.

“Not really” he answered her.

“Why? Because it seems like you were very dedicated to all this once upon a time” she continued.

“Life happened” he gave his answer in a tone which he hoped she’d realise he didn’t want to talk about it anymore.

Now he had to excuse himself, knowing Brino she might just bring up another question concerning the subject whether knowingly or unknowingly.

After excusing himself and leaving Brino’s side he went on to look for his mother.

“Oh my god, Damiloju! You have got to be kidding me!” Jessica all but exclaimed and he couldn’t help himself from smiling at his childhood friend as she pulled him into a hug.

“Jessie how are you?” he asked.

“I’m fine o! Dami, that’s how you just abandoned us. You just dumped all your friends and cut yourself off from every thing” she said tilting her head upwards in a sad face.

His face fell also, his smile evaporated and he hardened his eyes. He didn’t reply.

Jessica sighed “At least you came to this event. That’s a sure sign that you’re putting the past behind you”

Damiloju nodded thoughtfully “Maybe”

“So tell me, how have you been? Did you eventually get that Law degree?” Jessica said holding his arm.

“Yes” he nodded “I was called to bar a year ago. What of you? Are you still into that… er…”

“I’m into management and consulting now” Jessica filled in for him “Where are you going?” she had to ask as Damiloju made his way around the restaurant with her

“I’m looking for my mum” he said.

“Aww, you’re still a momma ‘s boy” Jessica said playfully hitting his arm while he shrugged to her statement “Come, I think I saw her a while back sha”

The pair didn’t go far, as his mother came into view a distance away from them, she stood elegant in a simple purple dinner gown as she engaged in conversation with some other women her age.

“Thank you” Damiloju nodded to Jessica, when they got to the women he greeted them all and engaged in the necessary niceties before seeking audience with his mother, Jessica excused herself at that moment also.

“You came” his mother said, beaming as she hugged him; he nodded his head also.

“Helen” Mrs Eweka said from behind them to his mother “oh, you’re busy”

“Never mind, what’s the matter?” Damiloju’s mother replied.

“No Helen, I’ll meet you later, talk to your son” Mrs Eweka nodded her head at Damiloju and was about to leave before asking “where’s your date? That girl”

Damiloju bit back a small smile at the way Mrs Eweka said girl, as if it was a nasty word “oh she’s somewhere here, I left her a while back”

“I don’t know, but it’s like I’ve seen that girl before, somewhere” Damiloju shrugged “her face. Her face just seems so … striking, so familiar. Let me excuse you both now” Mrs Eweka finally said, realising she was about to start rambling.

“So how’s your girlfriend?” Helen asked her son “why isn’t she with you?”

“She’s okay” Dami replied with a shrug.

“Come to think of it, I saw this girl from your secondary school tonight”

“Who?” Damiloju asked, uninterested.

“That Dare’s girlfriend” his mom said trying to remember her name as she put her palm to her head.

“Vwaire?” Dami asked, suddenly very interested in what his mother had to say.

“Yes that’s her name”

“But what’s she doing here?” the nervousness he was feeling seeped into his tone.

“She said that the groom is her family friend or something, you should see her all grown up now. Come to think of it, she looks so much like your girlfriend; the resemblance is very striking, they could easily pass off for one another you know?”

“Hmmn” was all he had to say

“Yes, do you know? Maybe they could be related o!”

“Maybe” Dami said, thoroughly distracted at this point “Mum you know what? I’m quite tired. I think I should be on my way home now” he bent in and gave his mother a quick peck after which she hugged him and he took off.

He had to find Brino and keep her away from Vwaire, the both of them could not meet. He got back to the place where he’d left her, Brino was no where in sight, he placed his hand on his forehead and gently began to massage his temple, where could she be? He turned around, hoping to find her among the throng of people within the building. Could she have gone outside? Was she trying to escape again? He’d already threatened to show her pepper if she dare escape, she didn’t have many places to go and he could easily find her in all of them.

He decided to venture out of the restaurant nevertheless.

“No! Don’t go!” he heard her voice before he could process anything else.

He was already outside the restaurant. She stood facing the road with her back to him as she gestured towards a silver Toyota Venza that was nearly out of their line of sight as it sped off into the night.
She stamped her foot in frustration as she groaned before turning around, she was dressed in a off-shoulder silver floor-lenght gown which did wonders for her figure, her hair was looking a little dishevelled as a lone tear of frustration rolled down her cheek, bringing her mascara along with it in a colour black down her face. She promptly froze when she saw him.

.

Vwaire stepped out of the restroom and began looking for her friend. Where was Tinuade for goodness sake? It was high time they went home and her aunt was very strict and hated her coming home late. She walked about the restaurant looking for her friend

“Have you seen Tinuade?” she asked the first familiar face she saw.

“Yes, see her there at the entrance” the person replied and pointed.

“Thank you” she quickly replied and started going after the lady in the green gown who was currently holding someone by the arm and they were going to be out of her line of sight in a matter of seconds.

By the time she made it outside, Tinuade and whoever was with her had made off in her car, she was too late to stop them and could only watch in frustration as the taillights blazed into the night.

“No! Don’t go!” she cried out with her hands outstretched. She was tired and frustrated and Tinuade had gotten into her car with only God knows who and had left her stranded. She stamped her foot against the ground as violently as she could in those accursed heels as she tried to let go of her emotions, she had to get inside and think of another way to get home she turned back to the restaurant and froze on the spot. Damiloju Rotimi-Savage was standing right before her; talk about blast from the past.

“What are you doing here? I thought I told you I never wanted to see you again in my life?” she questioned.

“Vwaire, it’s been 6 years now” he began.

“Shut up!” she screamed “I can’t handle this right now” she said to herself “I need to get home”

.

An hour later, Vwaire was seated at the back of a taxi cab, as it navigated it’s way around Yaba to where her house was located.

“Number 19 abi?” the taxi driver said breaking her out of her thoughts, she looked around they were already on her street.

“Yes” she answered the driver. They were at her house in a matter of seconds, Vwaire paid the cabbie, stepped out and began pounding the gate.

Gbam. Gbam. Gbam.

“Who dey for there?” the gateman called out from within

“Come on, open this gate before I change my mind” Vwaire yelled.

“Madam Vwaire, na you be that?” the  gateman inquired.

“Who else will it be. Open the gate jo!”

The gate was opened just then and Vwaire stormed into the compound.

“Tinuade what the hell?” Vwaire said as she threw the door open, Tinuade had apparently stepped into the house a few moments ago as she was still dressed in her party clothes and was being grilled by Aunty Juliana.

“Vwaire?” Tinuade beheld her eyes wide with shock.

“Who else would it be? Why did you leave me stranded at the party?”

“I swear, I didn’t know it wasn’t you and she has been saying it since, I didn’t understand”

“What rubbish are you saying?”

“Vwaire calm down” Aunty Juliana said causing Vwaire to take her eyes off Tinuade

“Mama, how do you expect me to calm down? Tinuade took my car away and left me stranded at a party, at night. How am I supposed to be calm?”

Aunty Juliana stepped up to where her niece stood and put her hands on her shoulder.

“Sweetheart calm down, Tinuade did not know that she left you stranded”

“Mama, what are you saying? Stop justifying her wrongdoings” Vwaire began.

“Vwaire!” Aunty Juliana said shaking her.

“Mama what?”

“Look” Aunty Juliana said and spun her niece around to see the third person in the room.

Vwaire’s mouth hung open in shock.
